A consistent record of what, where, and when makes cleanup work easier to repeat and easier to learn from.
The smallest useful dataset
For a cleanup report to become useful beyond one afternoon, record the location, date, approximate effort, and the main waste categories. A photo adds human context; a consistent category list adds comparability.
NOAA's Marine Debris Monitoring and Assessment Project is a good model because it standardizes shoreline observations. Garbamons can apply the same principle at a neighborhood scale without pretending that a community report is a scientific survey.
A simple field checklist
- Pin the exact place and note whether it is a beach, river edge, park, trail, or urban space.
- Record the date, duration, number of participants, and whether the site was revisited.
- Use broad waste categories first: plastic, fishing gear, glass, metal, cigarette waste, and mixed litter.
- Add an honest note about weather, access, hazards, and anything that needs a specialist response.
The action loop
A good record creates the next question: is the same litter returning, is the site safe to visit, or would a community event help? That is where a cleanup pin can connect to an Event, an update, or a later impact story.
